What is VO₂ Max & Why Does It Matter?

VO₂ Max is a measure of how much oxygen your body can use during intense exercise. The more

oxygen you can consume and deliver to your muscles, the better your body performs—and the longer it can perform before fatigue sets in.

From a performance perspective, it’s one of the best indicators of aerobic endurance. From a health

perspective, it's a powerful predictor of longevity and cardiovascular health. In fact, studies show that

higher VO₂ max levels are strongly associated with a lower risk of disease and death from all

causes—even more so than factors like smoking or high blood pressure.

In short: VO₂ max reflects how efficiently your body turns breath into movement—and it matters whether you’re an athlete or just trying to age well.

What the test measures

During your VO₂ test, we collect real-time data as you breathe through a mask while exercising.

This gives us a detailed look at your:

- VO₂ max – your peak aerobic capacity

- Aerobic and anaerobic thresholds

- Heart rate training zones

- Fat vs. carbohydrate usage

- Calories burned at different exertion levels

You’ll walk away with a clear, visual report—and more importantly, you’ll understand how to use it.

What to expect during your test

Most VO₂ tests take about 10–15 minutes of gradually increasing exercise on a treadmill or stationary bike.

You’ll wear a comfortable mask that measures your breath, and your heart rate will be monitored throughout. We’ll guide you through the whole process, encouraging you to go until you hit your personal max—whether that’s a light jog or an all-out sprint.

Before your test:

- Avoid intense exercise 24 hours prior

- Eat a light meal 2–3 hours beforehand

- Wear athletic clothing and running shoes

How to use your results

Your VO₂ data becomes a roadmap for smarter training and better results:

- Train in the right zones

- Build aerobic capacity

- Burn fat more efficiently

- Prevent plateaus

- Track progress

Why we use clinical grade equipment

At Thrive, we use the KORR CardioCoach, a portable metabolic system used by sports performance labs, cardiac rehab centers, and professional teams. It measures oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange in real time, giving you lab-quality results without the white coat. This isn’t a smartwatch estimate—it’s the real thing, used in hospitals and Olympic training centers alike.
